Your letter
Dear [Council Member], My name is [Your Name], and I am a resident of [Your City]. I am writing as a constituent concerned about the deployment of automated decision-making systems — specifically, predictive policing tools — in our local government. I respectfully request written answers to three foundational questions: 1. What AI and automated decision-making systems does our city currently use across all departments? 2. What decisions are these systems involved in making, and which of those decisions are effectively final? 3. Who is personally responsible for oversight, accountability, and correcting harm when these systems get it wrong? Tools like COMPAS have been shown to falsely label Black defendants as high-risk for recidivism at nearly twice the rate of white defendants. Race-based clinical algorithms have denied Black patients access to care. A single flaw in a widely-used hiring system can silently lock our community out of hundreds of jobs at once. The risks are not hypothetical, and our community deserves transparency. I am not anti-technology. I am pro-accountability. I ask that you support: • An independent, publicly published bias audit of every system in use. • A clear human-override and resident appeal process. • A disclosure requirement so residents know when an automated system is involved in a decision affecting them. I would appreciate a written response within 30 days. Thank you for your service and your attention. Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your City]
